News & Press: Global Wales Information

Member newsletter - 14 October

15 October 2008
Keeping you up-to-date on your GlobalWales network:

Show us where you are!

At the request of members, GlobalWales now has a map-thing where you can put a marker on your current location on the planet. Useful for members trying to find other Welsh people in the same part of the world. Why not visit here today and enter your location? You'll find the new map-thing link from the GlobalWales home page under "Search":"Where we are".

And you can chat ...
Again, some members have been keen to see a Chat facility at GlobalWales.com. Now, you'll find that anyone among your Connections who is on-line will have an on-line symbol next to their name in your Profile. Also, this symbol will appear if you do a Member Directory search and resulting members are on-line. You will find that you can "chat" with on-line members in real time. Don't want to be shown as on-line? You can adjust your "My Preferences" settings to prevent this. Given the fact that we are spread across many time zones, there is probably no single "good time" to find members on-line. The only suggestions we can make is that most members appear to update their profiles from around 8.30 am to noon Welsh time (currently GMT+1); also, when you read this, there's a fair chance that some members will be trying out the facility right at this moment!

Val made it to Icon
Our first attempt at concerted action to assist a member worked! Valerie Wood Gaiger has become a W-Icon, following a poll by Sky TV and the Daily Express in the UK. She expressed surprise that voters came from right around the world ... hint, Val, you're a GlobalWales member and the network got behind you. Thanks to all that voted. We have made Val's business our featured business for October. Now, who else among us could do with a bit of support from 400 members and 25,000 readers?

The Sunday Lunch Guide is now public
Another piece of network collaboration has worked brilliantly. We have the beginnings of a great guide to Sunday lunch in Wales, assembled by members and edited by member Adrian Angove in between his sessions on Wikipedia! Check it out here...  By the way, Pennsylvania State University is surveying Welsh identity in America and is looking for help. It's a relatively easy 28 question survey that should take less than five minutes to complete. Find it here ...

Flying over Wales
Swansea-based Gruffydd Harries, who runs the Chamber Orchestra Of Wales, was the winner of the GlobalWales/Highland Airways competition so he will be heading out over our beautiful country before too long. At the time of winning, "Griff" was a GlobalWales e-news reader but not actually a member - he is now, of course!

Blog Alert
There's some great advice offered by Sharon Jones to Gaabriel Becket on the pitfalls of researching your Welsh heritage, in the Welsh Ancestry Group here...  While we are at it, take a look at Gaabriel's own post in the USA and Canada Welsh blog about an ambitious event the Americymru are organising here ...

Who do you know?
Please take a moment to ponder your contacts - is there anyone who would enjoy GlobalWales or who might be a useful contact for members? If so, the network would be very grateful if you could invite them in via the "Tell A Friend" function.

Hwyl, all
Peter
